Chunja
Thousand Character Classic, learned the classical way.
What it is
Chunja is a quiet, offline study app for the 千字文 (Thousand Character Classic) — the 6th-century rhyming primer that taught Korean and Japanese scholars classical Chinese characters for fifteen centuries. The full text is bundled inside the app: 250 four-character stanzas, 1,000 distinct traditional characters.
How it works
- Read stanzas in their original order, the way 서당 students have read them for 1,500 years — never atomized into a list of isolated characters.
- Practice for 2–3 minutes per day: one new stanza plus a handful of due-for-review characters, scheduled with a simple spaced-repetition routine.
- Three languages — Korean (음·훈), English (meaning), Japanese (音読み·訓読み). Display follows your system language, or you can pin one.
- No login. No cloud. No ads. Nothing leaves your device.
Source
The 1,000 characters and Korean readings are sourced from Korean Wikisource (번역:천자문, public domain). Chunja is a labor of love for classical literacy — not a peer-reviewed scholarly edition.
